osteopathy for
shoulder complaints
who is the treatment suitable for?
Whether it concerns a frozen shoulder, overuse, instability, or complaints after surgery: osteopathy can often be of great significance. The cause is rarely solely in the shoulder.
When recovery fails to occur or strength training has insufficient effect, the actual cause is often found elsewhere in the body. An osteopathic examination helps to identify these underlying factors.
The shoulder as part of the kinetic chain
For good shoulder function, several structures must work together: the shoulder blade, collarbone (AC and SC joint), ribs, and upper back. If one of these areas does not move properly, the shoulder must compensate. This often leads to overuse and pain.
In addition, tension in the chest or abdomen, or a disturbed muscle balance around the shoulder, can also play an important role in the development or maintenance of complaints.
Muscle imbalance as a cause of shoulder complaints
In many shoulder problems, there is a disturbed cooperation between the muscles around the shoulder. Some muscles take on too much work, while others contribute too little. This often leads to an incorrect position of the humeral head and overuse.
This is usually not about muscle weakness, but about an incorrect movement pattern. With the help of NeuroKinetic Therapy (NKT), I trace which muscle imbalance or ‘jammer’ disrupts the cooperation. Once this is restored, the control improves immediately, the overload decreases, and the complaints often diminish quickly.
an incorrect position of the humeral head
In most people, the humeral head is too far forward, upward, and inward. This position causes an uneven load on the joint and reduces the space for the tendons when lifting the arm. As a result, sensors in the capsule or tendons become overstimulated, which prompts the nervous system to send an ‘alarm signal’ during movement.
By correcting the position of the shoulder, this alarm signal often disappears. The result: the muscles relax and the strength increases almost immediately.
what can you expect from the treatment?
Even with long-term shoulder complaints, we often still achieve good results. With the right stimulus, you will often notice a noticeable improvement in movement and pain level after just one treatment. As soon as the threat to the body decreases, the muscles relax, the strength increases, and the pain diminishes.
do not let shoulder complaints determine your daily life
Even if you have already tried everything, there is often still a gain to be made once the body receives the right stimulus. Shoulder complaints do not have to remain a part of your daily life.
